Northwestern University is a private research university founded in 1851 that occupies a 240 acre campus on the shores of Lake Michigan. In addition to over seventy established majors, students can choose or design a non-traditional combination for a unique undergraduate experience. With one of the ten largest endowments among universities in the U.S. and a plethora of research institutes like the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, Materials Research Center, Institute for Policy Research, its no wonder that Northwestern University is one of the most active research universities in the nation. Students engage in community service both locally, with events like the annual Dance Marathon, and internationally with service-learning trips run by the Global Engagement Summer Institute. With Chicago just thirty minutes away, students can take advantage of museums, sports, theater and music around the corner to enrich their undergraduate experience.

Student Life Originally a fountain donated by the class of 1902, ‘The Rock’ is now painted by students constantly to advertize their organizations. Other quirky traditions include growling like wildcats when the opposing football team has the ball and partaking in ‘Primal Scream’ at 9pm the Sunday before finals every quarter. Students are active in the community, and the annual 30-hour “Dance Marathon” is widely attended and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every winter. Include the numerous performing arts productions, media outlets and sporting events, and its a wonder students find a way to study!
