One of the original 8 ‘Public Ivies,’ the University of Michigan is a public research school that gives its undergraduate student community access to world-renowned professors in a range of academic subjects. Students enroll in programs in one of 12 undergraduate schools, most opting for a major in the College of Literature, Science and Arts. While big first-year classes can pack over 500 students into a lecture hall, freshmen can get more personal attention in the First Year Seminars program. The University of Michigan is a big state school, yet many students come from all over the country and all over the world to form part of the Wolverine community. Students are known for being very active, and they participate widely in a vast array of student organizations when not hanging around Ann Arbor, a quintessential college town with countless student-friendly establishments.
