Topic of Choice – Common Application

Opinion of a College Admissions Consultant….

Usually I advise students against selecting the “topic of your choice” essay option.

Admission staffers may perceive this option as an easy opportunity to submit a previously written essay, especially when  the “topic of choice” resembles another college’s application essay prompt.

While most directors do not state a preference, and some will tell you that the “most memorable” (good and bad!) essays they have read have fallen into this category.

To avoid the risk, consider adapting your essay to one of the defined topics, unless your  “topic of choice” essay is truly amazing, and not easily adaptable.

No matter which topic you choose, make sure that your essay is “appropriate” and reveals your personality, character and reasons why you’d be an asset to the college community.
